Abortion is a women’s choice, and more needs to be done to protect women to make that choice, movie industry professionals have said.

Ghanaian movie Director Shirley Frimpong Manso said people needed to be sensitized on abortion.

She said the subject must be discussed more if Ghana wants to prevent more deaths through illegal abortion.

Society should also stop treating it as something evil, as that makes people have to hide it and resort to dangerous methods, she said.

If it was talked about for young women in particular that would  “cut down on death through abortion by wack doctors,” she told Citi FM at the premiere of the 7th and 8th episodes of of her political drama ‘Shampaign’.

“Abortion should be a choice like everything else although it might depend on the circumstances. It is not as simply as don’t allow abortion, you must look at all the angles,” she added.

Actress in the series Princess Fathia Nkrumah also told Citi FM every woman should have a choice over her body, and it was not up to society to judge people who opt for abortion because it is a choice.

The series is a political drama, and the most recent episodes were centered on a young girl who out of fear of stigmatization lied about her pregnancy, claiming she was raped.

The political drama series follows the lives of a young political campaign team who work tirelessly to make political history by getting a single mother elected as the first female President of the Country.
