Artiste manager, Nana Poku, popularly known as Ashes has questioned why most Ghanaian celebrities die poor.

His comment came in the wake of reports that former Ghana Actors Guild President, Nii Odoi Mensah who died on Monday, needed $26,000 to undergo kidney treatment.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, an emotional Ashes who could not fathom why actors beg for support to help them pay their medical bills, called for structures to be put in place in order to make sure that actors are well to do.

“Why do our celebrities die paupers? It will get to a time everyone will venture into politics and you cannot blame them because what is in the acting field for me [them]? I end up soliciting for funds in times of need and if I don’t get the said amount, I pass on. Look at Nkommode, Okala and the likes,” he said.

Adding, “The creative arts industry needs structures. The question I’m asking is, why do we have the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana? Those who choose that field, where is their job market? We don’t even have a theatre.”
