Winner of Gospel Song of the Year at the just ended 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), Nicholas Omane Acheampong, has stated that he did not solicit votes because he knew he would win the category.
A section of the public expressed surprise at his win on the bases that not only were other songs better than his the year under review but he was not heard asking fans to vote for him.
But Omane Acheampong in an interview with Abrantepa on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch on Tuesday said he knew his song, “Aporsor” stood a huge chance of winning and as such, did not warrant any campaign.
“If you paid attention to the list, only one looked deserving, only one had the light so he needn’t worry. At the end of the day, the winner was the one with the light. I had won already and that’s why you didn’t see me canvassing for votes; not because I was not interested in it,” he said.

Omane Acheampong beat competition from Hour by Hour (SP Kofi Sarpong ft Joyce Blessing), Yoboyo (Kofi Gyan), Wowo Nkwa Wowo Ade (Mary Owusu), and Hyebere Sesafuor (Obaapa Christie).
He however lost the Gospel Artiste of the Year to SP Kofi Sarpong. On whether he was surprised at the outcome, the ‘Aporsor’ hit-maker replied in the negative.
“For some time now, they have decided to split the awards because gospel music has limited categories. We had three but they scrapped the Gospel Album of the Year this year. I knew it would be split so I wasn’t surprised at all,” he said.
According to him, he is happy he won the Gospel Song of the Year because, “The song is what causes a change in people’s life. What I really wanted to win is the Gospel Song of the Year.”
